TriviAid - Fiends With Benefits

Howdy, all Triviaholics! We have an exciting project in the works, and all are invited to take part. Recently, a couple of calls for participation in fundraising events have inspired a number of trivia hosts and players to contribute their time and, most likely, Linden dollars to some worthy causes.

There were two meetings called on very short notice but fairly well attended -- one on Monday evening and one on Tuesday afternoon, SL time -- in which plenty of ideas got tossed around. What we are conceptualizing is a week-long series of trivia events from which all tips or donations will be pooled and contributed to a charity selected for that series and to make a regular thing of it (once every two or three months, we'll see how it goes).

The attendees at the meetings approved the first two projects, and the dates for each have recently been released. Here is the information for those interested in getting involved (it's never too late!):

July 1-15: Benefit to raise funds for the National Wildlife Federation, which is working to save wildlife from the effects of the recent oil spill
It will probably make the most sense to have the trivia week from Monday, July 5, to Sunday, July 11, but we can address that as a group. When we initially met, the charity associated with this project was undecided but the Audobon Society had been put forward. The National Wildlife Federation, however, became the final choice. If this changes anyone's opinion of the project, don't be shy about saying so (thinking of those who approved Audobon Society here). I address CBA below. :)

October 4-10: Mind Out! to raise funds for the International Mental Health Research Organization
This one is off into the future, but the backstory is that there was some controversy with the running of the recent Black and Blue Fashion Fair, which was meant to raise awareness of mental health issues. A number of designers pulled out, and so some dedicated individuals have decided to organize a different type of event for a trusted international organization, the IMHRO.

Other stuff:

The name TriviAid was suggested by Tezcatlipoca Mistwood, and everyone who was present at the Tuesday meeting or who responded when I posted the name to Plurk has given it a vote of approval. This is a name for the project, not for a specific group of people. We are not planning to create a new group at this time, since many people have an excess of trivia groups already. Instead, we plan to use the Trivia Fiends group as our primary means of in-world communication. Joshua Schism has fitted the group out with tags that read, "Fiends With Benefits."

On a different note, an important concern that has been raised is to remain aware of the cultural impact of the charities we choose to support. We have an international community among us at trivia events. Simultaneously, however, many charities that gain high profile support in Second Life are based in the United States, and I recognize that the National Wildlife Federation is no exception. Nonetheless, the oil spill and the imperative to support its cleanup ultimately affect all people and creatures in ecosystems around the Gulf of Mexico and the Caribbean, and our second project will specifically benefit an international organization. Because this is conceptualized as an ongoing project, we will have more opportunities to continue extending an international reach. That is to say, I know that the choice of NWF for the first project might evoke some red flags, but it allows us to connect with a larger project on the first go. And we will have more chances to diversify our scope.

We will announce future meetings in Trivia Fiends, most likely with more advance notice than the previous ones. If you want to be involved, please just jump right in. :)

What do you think of the automated side of trivia? Or maybe I should start by asking, do you think of the automated side of trivia? Sometimes I go to listed events and find that the game is trivia ball-powered, and though it took me a while to figure out how I felt about that, I've recently realized that my reaction is overwhelmingly neutral. If I had tried to imagine overwhelming neutrality prior to that realization, I probably would have been stumped. But it is true. Trivia balls are like the frozen dinners of the trivia circuit. They're good to have on hand when you're in a pinch, and you always know what you're getting, but they're nothing like the real thing.

I've mostly taken trivia balls and their like for granted, and at many events with live hosts, that's exactly what you're supposed to do: the random trivia machine at Sharon's Diner runs in the background while the "real" trivia is delivered by a host. Honey Potez once combined a trivia orb with her live game during her stint at Club Shiraz for a humorous effect after being called a trivia bot at her previous event.

Because these respectable hosts use them as finger food but not the main course, I sometimes need to readjust my thinking when I walk into a new venue where they constitute part and parcel of the advertised trivia. They're what clubs often have when they're more interested in casual trivia play than in something innovative and competitive. And it's hard to argue that there's anything wrong with that. They're a completely unpretentious means of tickling the brain for lindens.

Moreover, I would take automated trivia over a poorly hosted event any day. If, for instance, someone ran a trivia ball with L$100 per question in the 7:00pm slot, you know where everyone would be... and where they wouldn't be. Clubs that use trivia machines, however, aren't all the same in a lot of other respects. Some places have a more involved or more competitive group of regulars than others, and it's much more enjoyable to go to one of those than to be the only person answering, having your own little conversation with the machine, which may be economically profitable, but it's otherwise not very interesting and would make a lot of people feel self-conscious.

There seem to be ways to make automated trivia more appealing, though. While I haven't been to Envy's Pub in a long time, I remember the Saturday noon trivia being as good as automated trivia gets, for three main reasons: the question frequency, the audience, and the fact that the questions were changed regularly. The questions were only L$7 each, but the machine's timing was rapid enough to get through sixty questions in an event, making the possible winnings comparable to those in many other games. More importantly, the pub consistently attracted people who were there for the trivia. Between the group's focus on the questions and the quick pace, it was some of the most concentrated paid trivia I've experienced, with the Zoo Bar's occasional Gogomodo contests the only other games comparable.

More common are automated games like the one Honey and I went to at the Bubblegum Factory on Wednesday. There were thirty questions for L$10 each and a somewhat participatory group. It was better than most machine-driven events I've attended in that a variety of people were answering, and people weren't afraid to guess when they weren't sure of the answer. I asked if they ever had trivia with a live host there, and it actually sparked a small discussion:

These are all good points. And they all factor into why I used the frozen dinner analogy at the beginning of this piece: It works fine, occasionally it can use a little manual adjustment, the portions are precise, and it's much easier. But it's not the same as the real thing. It might sound harsh to refer to live trivia as "real" and automated trivia as therefore not real, but I mean it much like the food analogy: in a literal sense, the edible stuff in a frozen dinner is real food, but in comparison, a meal that you or a family member prepared or that you smelled cooking while you waited for it in a restaurant will always feel more real. There's no substitute for a host you can interact with, who writes questions with his or her audience in mind. There's more room for innovative and alternative formats, including multiple-winner styles and methods for alleviating fastest-typist bias. Repeated topics are common in any kind of trivia, but automated trivia will give you the same questions over and over if you don't take care to change them occasionally.

Automated trivia is also seldom informative and sometimes out-of-date. I prefer trivia questions that were written with their informational context in mind over random facts floating around in textspace unattached to additional meaning. Trivia machines cannot give follow-up information or provide nuance or explanation to the questions unless it's programmed into them, and I haven't yet seen one that did that. Although there are certainly trivia hosts who are unable to do any of these things either, simply being present in the game makes it possible to try.

Breaking In

Jewels Carminucci held her debut trivia hosting event in Volcan Tenorio sim on Monday. A competitive group was in attendance, and response was mostly very positive. Jewels also introduced a new question format. Each question had two parts, an "easy" one and a "hard" one. Each player could answer the two parts separately or on the same lines, allowing the choice between playing it safe or taking a risk with more typing.

The questions were, for the most part, very challenging, even the "easy" part of some of the questions. More unusual than Jewels's new format is that she included an entire category of math problems. If Jewels continues hosting and retains the same level of difficulty, the crowd will probably be similar to that which attends Lebn Bucyk's trivia. At this point, she expects it will be an irregularly held event, subject to how often she has time to write questions.

Ringing In

From midnight, January 1, GMT+14 to midnight, January 1, GMT-11, the Trivia Fiends event announcement group held trivia on the hour, every hour, via group Instant Message, to celebrate the New Year as each time zone around the world passed into 2010. Ten different hosts split shifts and delivered three questions each. Players were reminded to reopen their group IM windows at the top of each hour. The event ran more or less smoothly, and the fact that there were very few scheduled in-person events throughout the day made the event all the more welcome.

Checking In

Returning to the trivia circuit after a long hiatus, Trinka Breen, formerly of The Village, will begin hosting trivia events again beginning Saturday, January 2. The venue is called Memories, the game begins at 11:30am, and the question payouts are L$10 and L$20 for regular and bonus questions. Trinka's return to trivia is notable primarily because of the events that transpired last spring with Trinka's event at The Village at their center. Trinka was not responsible for those events, and so his game's revival might be seen as a fresh opportunity for host and players alike to start over with a blank slate.

Big for Your Britches

This afternoon (in SL time), relative newcomer to the trivia scene Aiden Falmer held his first ever trivia event at the Victoria Pub in Eudora sim. He enjoyed a nice-sized turnout with a number of trivia regulars in attendance. Aiden seems very enthusiastic about hosting trivia, and on many levels, his first effort was promising. He seemed to enjoy himself, most of his questions were perfectly competent, and some of them were quite good.

This event was better run and more enjoyable than many off-the-beaten-path events I've attended, such as the one I wrote about in this space last week. Aiden has a lot of room to grow, however, and he'll need to do so if he wishes to continue attracting a competitive group to his games. No one's first time is ever perfect (which of course could be said about a lot of things). If Aiden continues attending other events and taking note of what makes some questions work and others not, and if he pays attention to when his own questions are met with confusion or frustration, I trust he'll be able to iron out some of the wrinkles that were evident in the small number of questions that suffered from vagueness.

A larger number of his questions were rather straightforward, such as, "What tree is used in the cultivation of silkworms?" There were no stumpers; the questions that were not immediately answered could be spammed. A few particularly good ones took a little bit of thought, for example, "Which American President was the first not to have been born in the Thirteen Colonies?" The questions appeared to be written by him, which always deserves credit and, I believe, patience for weaknesses when a host is just starting out.

There was some confusion about the start time for the event, as some attendees had heard that it would start at 2:30 but at 2:45 were told it would begin at 3:00. Aiden was prompt about kicking off at 3:00, however, even running through a few "warmup questions" for L$5 each in the few minutes prior. He kept the event running at a suitably brisk (but not rushed) pace, though he has yet to master the transition time between countdown and question.

All of these minor flaws are the sorts of things sharp hosts can repair as time goes on. There was an additional set of drawbacks, however, that I'm afraid will be more difficult for Aiden to recognize and contend with. In brief, Aiden's approach to hosting trivia is ego-driven in nearly every respect. I cannot know for certain what grounds his understanding of how trivia works or can work in Second Life, but so far he has not displayed a strong grasp on the social workings of the trivia community. Further, he does not seem inclined to put the time into figuring them out before pursuing his goal of becoming an SL trivia host.

Some small examples of Aiden's self-emphasis persisted from the time prior to the event all the way until after it ended. His bonuses were "Falmer Bonuses," he included a question on the topic of "Me" (that is, him), complete with capitalization, in which players were asked to guess his height, and he was conspicuously anxious about receiving tips even before he had given players a reason to tip him.

The crowning example, however, was that after his twenty mostly respectable (but nothing to write home about) questions, he informed us,

...not seeming to realize that in order to have a group for followers, fans, or stalkers, it is generally a good idea to have at least one of those first. This announcement explained a lot, though, about how Aiden perceives.. something. I'm only half-sure about what. It might be trivia hosting, it might be himself, or both. or, less likely, neither. He seems to see trivia hosting as possibly equivalent to a DJ gig. He mentioned later that he manages clubs in SL, so perhaps he was generalizing from his experience in that context.

It means, however, that he has not put in the mileage as a trivia player to notice that trivia hosts -- at least those in the contexts in which he is attempting to advertise -- do not have fan clubs. There are groups associated with events and venues, and most are flexible about allowing others to use the group chat to announce events (if they remain appropriately on-topic).

I asked him after most players had left what his interest in trivia stemmed from, and he answered, "It just seemed like a good way to entertain and so forth." Well, certainly, trivia events are a means of entertaining ourselves, but this response begs the question: why does he seem so confident that others already wish to be entertained by him? That is something he needs to earn, which doesn't happen simply by putting together a game stacked with adequate questions, paying L$10 each for them, and spending more time asking for tips than doing advance research on how to appropriately announce an event in Trivia Fiends.

Aiden is young, and I am optimistic. It's still possible for him to grow into the trivia scene, but he'll need to accept, before anything else, that he doesn't already know what he's doing. He can deliver an event that is stronger than what many non-trivia clubs have to offer, but really, that only counts for so much when you address a room full of seasoned hosts and players as if they ought to be excited when you offer to pay a whole L$20 for a bonus. He may at this point be best off at a venue where traffic is reliable, trivia questions are minimally competitive, and the events are not designed to be personality-driven. I have already suggested to him that he speak to a friendly man at such a place.

Southern Comfort. I could use some.

Trivia happens in Second Life in myriad forms, and so I am no longer dramatically surprised when a venue holds an event with a format completely different from what I'm used to. Becki Verne's "Trivia with Dancing" and "Dancing with Trivia" distinction usually turns out to have very little gray area. Today, though, I attended an event that stretches the applicability of the "with Trivia" part of the latter classification.

The club is called Maggie's Southern Comfort, and the inside dance area looks like a country/western bar. The event was held on the roof, in a space called Ivor's Oldies. The listing advertised '50s to '70s music with some trivia. As Josh Schism later noted, the word "trivia" appeared three times in the listing. Any more than that, I'd suggest, and it would have been false advertising, since only three questions were asked during this two-hour event.

I've profiled events before that would be perfectly enjoyable if you attend for the music or the dancing or the socializing and not so much for the trivia. I wish I could be that charitable this time. Rach Borkotron and I were the only two people there unaffiliated with the club until more than an hour into the event. The DJ, Tryxie Seetan -- who was also asking the trivia -- and the hostess, Candee Baily, were very nice, and I was glad we were there for their sake. Running a successful club in SL is hard, and they were doing what they could to send out notices and teleport friends. I don't know what makes the difference when it comes to the longevity of non-trivia clubs, so I don't feel it's my place to critique Southern Comfort on that level.

I do, however, know what I look for in a trivia event, and I can say with confidence that this isn't it. The three questions were spaced about half an hour apart. The prizes were not in cash but in gift cards, which is fair: the listing did refer not to lindens but to "prizes," and if the gift cards were, in fact, awarded in lindens, they would have been well worth waiting half an hour for. The questions, meanwhile, weren't ground-shattering:

I know I'm preaching to the choir, but the first question, as written, has several possible answers, and one could challenge the use of the word "owned" in the third. I wouldn't hold the trivia at a dance club up to the same standard as one expects at places that are all-trivia-all-the-time, but if I were asking players to wait for such a long span between questions, I'd want the trivia to be worth their time or, at the very least, not hugely flawed.

As I've mentioned in the past, I don't usually listen to the stream during trivia events, but I had the music on this time because at the beginning, we didn't yet know if the trivia would be about the songs being played. When Rach and I came in, Tryxie said it was a sock hop; she had '50s tunes playing and soon had a poodle skirt on. She spun some great oldies for an hour and a half but eventually ran out of era-appropriate tracks and began playing anything within reach. I believe she kept mostly (though not entirely) within the '50s-to-'70s range that the event listing ensured, but I still found it odd that a DJ at a club called Ivor's Oldies would run out of songs that are typically considered "oldies." And even if "Kokomo" is by the Beach Boys, the song is still very much a product of the late '80s.

I had a nice time hanging out with Rach, and since we each won a gift card to a store that an in-world search determined to be for biker clothes, we plan to spend it together on something Chaos-appropriate. Josh arrived only minutes after Rach left, and it was fun to be with him there, as well. It's never a bad thing to say that spending time with friends was the best part of an event. I do wish, though, that there was more I could say for the event itself. Regardless of how friendly Tryxie and Candee and the other staff were, it doesn't balance out against the mediocrity of the trivia.
